If you are planning a trip to Barcelona in the autumn and have an interest towards jazz music - do not miss to attend any of the events that belong to the Barcelona Jazz Festival. This is an annual festival, which offers the city's residents and visitors the world-class concerts.
Interest for the Jazz in Spain goes back to an early interest in Dixieland music and music from New Orleans in the early 1930s. But during the Francisco Franco regime between the mid 1930s and in 1975, Spain was largely isolated and world cultural events were not a common thing. Soon Jazz became a symbol of Spain's liberation from the dictator.
Jazz festival in Barcelona has its roots all the way back to 1966 when the first public jazz festival was organized in Spain. Now and then the festival is a privately sponsored event, unlike many other jazz festivals around Europe. Through the years, the likes of Dave Bruebeck, Sonny Rollins and Max Roach played at the festival. Barcelona Jazz Festival is considered to be the best jazz festival in Europe. The festival program this year offers, like every year, the superstars that you can not miss. Among the artists who will perform are Pat Metheny, Dave Holland, Charles Flores and many more.
The festival lasts for 40 days, starts in October 20th and ends on 1 December. In total, the program includes 60 concerts, in addition to concerts of international stars there are also performances of new, young talents. So if you are in Barcelona between Oct 20 and Dec 1 - do not miss to visit one of the concerts
